Falling Upon the Correspondence: Poetry Reading

A one-night poetry reading conceived as a structural film.
Falling Upon the Correspondence, by Samuel Budin and collaborator Miguel Gallego, brings poetry and projected images together in a live experiment in coincidence, timing, and association.
A group of poets will read their work alongside a remotely controlled 35mm slide projection. The carousel contains slides submitted by a select group of contributors, largely visual artists. Rather than following a predetermined sequence, the “edit” of the work happens live through the coincidental interaction between speaker and image.
The project takes its cue from what film theorist Michel Chion calls synchresis: the phenomenon in which two separately occurring elements are perceived as belonging together when they happen simultaneously.
The result is part poetry reading, part projection, and part live structural film—an encounter between words and images that can never happen in quite the same way twice.
The first installment was presented at La Plaza Cultural in Alphabet City, where it brought together approximately 40 people.
