How might we channel ghosts, and what might they teach us?
The Emanation brings together performance, painting, drawing, video, and ritual in an exploration of haunting—not simply as something belonging to the past, but as a way of making contact with what remains.
The project began at Gallery for Ghosts, an attic gallery inside a seventeenth-century house in Norwichtown, Connecticut. There, dancer and scholar Jacquelyn Marie Shannon performed an improvised, butoh-inspired dance while artist Candice Flewharty drew live in response to her movements. Those immediate, gestural drawings later became the basis for a series of oil paintings.
At Gallery 198, The Emanation takes on a new life. The paintings and drawings are joined by live video connecting the gallery back to Gallery for Ghosts, extending the project across two spaces and creating a kind of channel between them.
The exhibition opens October 8 with a live ritual performance by Shannon, activating Gallery 198 and inviting visitors into an evolving network of bodies, objects, places, histories—and possible ghosts.
